With its long and colourful history, the University of Vienna has become into one of the largest universities in Europe, and is also one of the most renowned, especially in the humanities.

It counts 15 Nobel Prize recipents amongst its alumni and has been the academic home of a large number of figures both of historical and academic importance.

Established with papal support in the 1300s, during the Reformation period, in reaction the Church was given control of the University and maintained it for more than 150 years.  It was only in the middle of the 1700s that the Empress Maria Theresa wrested control of the University back, allowing further reforms which meant non-Catholics could enrol and German became the language of instruction.
