McGill University is one of Canada's best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the leading universities in the world.  With students coming to McGill from some 150 countries, the student body is the most internationally diverse of any research-intensive university in the country.  

Founded in 1821, the University and bears the name of James McGill, a prominent Montréal merchant from Glasgow, Scotland, whose bequest formed the beginning of the University.  With 21 faculties and professional schools, McGill offers degrees and diplomas in over 300 fields of study, including medicine, law, engineering, arts and sciences, and interdisciplinary areas.

There are two campuses: the main one set upon 32 hectares at the foot of Mount Royal in central Montréal; and the second one, the Macdonald Campus, is situated on 6.5 square kilometres of fields and forested land in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, 30 km west of the city.
