Program Description:

University of ChileUChile_1

The University of Chile, Universidad de Chile (UC), was founded in1842 as the replacement and continuation of the former colonial Royal University of San Felipe, which turn was previously the University of St Tomás de Aquino established in 1622.  It is the oldest higher education institution in Chile.

During the military distatorship, the University was stripped of its regional campuses, which were given to other institutions, its presidents had to be approved by the dictatorship and generally the University was allowed to decline while other institutions received increasing support all in an attempt to minimise the influence of the University on the country.

The University today has 38,00 students in 14 faculties and four interdisciplinary institutes spread across 13 campuses all within Santiago.
