Program Description:

Shanghai Jiao Tong UniversitySJTU

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the leading comprehensive universities in China with a strong focus on research. It was founded in 1896 as Nanyang Public School by an imperial edict under the Business and Telegraphs Office of the imperial government.  Reflecting the turbulent times in which it has existed, the University has had seven name changes before its current one was adopted in the late 1950s.

There are a number of campuses, the original being in the former French concession in Shanghai, which still displays vestiges of French influence.  The newest and, now main campus since 1987, Minhang, is on the outskirts of metropolitan Shanghai.  The University has over 42,000 students with more than half studying at graduate level.  Known particularly for its Science and Engineering, in the 1920s and 30s SJTU was sometimes referred to as the “Oriental MIT”.

Jiang Zemin, president of the People's Republic of China from 1989 to 2002, is an alumnus from SJTU. He graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering.

SJTU is a Universitas 21 member.
