Program Description:

Zhejiang University Zhejiang

Zhejiang University (ZJU) is a large comprehensive university located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, approximately 180 km west of Shanghai. Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University is one of China's oldest institutions of higher education. Is is a member of the C9 League which comprises the top nine universities in mainland China.  It has approximately 23,000 undergraduate students and 22,000 graduate students.

After the Communist takeover in China in 1949, major educational reforms meant that many universities were divided into single discipline institutions. In 1998, however, with the approval of the State Council, the new Zhejiang University was established as a combination of four major universities that had existed in Hangzhou over the previous half-century, namely Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University.  In 2006 a $40 million endowment from two wealthy businessmen, one an alumnus of the University, was the largest donation to a university in China and meant the establishment of a new campus for the University.
