Sibelius Academy

SIB

The Sibelius Academy forms part of the University of the Arts, Helsinki and has a repuation as a world renowned university-level music school.

The Academy is the only music university in Finland and is one of the largest European music institutes. It was established in 1882 as the Helsinki Music Institute under the Swedish name Helsingfors Musikinstitut and was renamed Sibelius Academy in 1939 in order to honour its former student and Finland's most celebrated composer, Jean Sibelius.

In 2013, the academy merged with two formerly independent universities, the Theatre Academy, Helsinki and Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, to form the University of the Arts, Helsinki. There are approximately 1,700 students in the Academy; each year an estimated 150-170 new bachelor and master level students are admitted.
