Program Description:

Rupert Charles University of Heidelberg

Established in 1386 by Ruprecht I, Elector Palatine, for whom it was named, Rupert Charles University of Heidelberg or Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg is the oldest university in Germany.  It is located in the German state of Baden-Württemberg in the picturesque city of Heidelberg which straddles a tributary of the Rhine River.

For six centuries, the University has laid claim to a vast array of scholarly and scientific achievements making it not only one of the oldest universities in the world, but also one of the most renowned and forward-looking centres of learning in existence.

The motives behind the foundation of the university were dynastic rivalry, the Great Schism and serious political tensions. With two other universities already established in Prague and Vienna, Elector Ruprecht I of the Palatinate decided to follow suit and set up an institution in Heidelberg, thus proving himself a wise and circumspect rule. Not least, this new seat of learning could only enhance the reputation of the Palatinate and its then capital, Heidelberg.
