University of Triestetriesteuni

The University of Trieste, Università degli Studi di Trieste (UNITS), founded in 1924, is the university of Trieste, the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. On the Adriatic Sea, the city is less than an hour's drive away from the border with Slovenia and Croatia. The University has about 23,000 students and a strong reputation in Italy for its research.  It was ranked second among the top medium-sized universities in Italy in the independently published rankings in 2013 by the daily newspaper La Repubblica, which takes into account services, scholarships and benefits, infrastructure, web communication, and internationalisation.

The existing exchange agreement is with the departments of 'Legal, Language, Translation and Interpreting Studies' and 'Political and Social Sciences', in which Trieste is especially strong.

From 1947 to 1954 Trieste was an independent city-state with the title of 'the Free Territory of Trieste'. Half of it was governed by tha Allies and the other half by the Yugoslav Army. In 1954 the Allied part was ceded to Italy, whereas the Yugoslav occupied part became officially part of Yugoslavia.
