Program Description:

Gakushuin Women's CollegeGWC

Gakushuin Women's College (GWC), is a four-year, tertiary undergraduate institution with a two year post-graduate Master of Arts program in Intercultural Studies in its Graduate School.  The Toyama campus is in Shinjuku in Tokyo.

The history of Gakushuin Women's College dates back to March 1847, when Emperor Komei established an institution named Gakushuin in Kyoto, in order to educate the children of the nobility. When the capital of Japan was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo, formerly Edo, a ceremony inaugurating a new Gakushuin was held in Tokyo in October 1877.

The origin of the name "Gakushuin" is said to have come from the Japanese reading of the Chinese characters for "to be taught" and "to learn" in the following quotation from the Analects of Confucius: "To be taught and to learn the truth is such a precious thing."

The current emperor of Japan, Emperor Akihito, and the Crown Prince were educated at Gakushuin University, the co-ed counterpart of GWC.
