University of California
When it first opened
its doors in 1869, the University of California had just 10 faculty members and 38 students. Today, the UC system includes more than 220,000 students and more than 170,000 faculty and staff, with more than 1.5 million alumni living and working around the world. UC researchers are pioneers in agriculture, medicine, technology and the environment. Thousands of California jobs, billions of dollars in revenue, and countless everyday household items – from more plentiful fruits and vegetables to compact fluorescent light bulbs – can be traced back to UC discoveries. UC’s campuses at Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz provide exciting environments that foster world-class educational and research opportunities and generate a wide range of benefits and services that touch the lives of Californians every day.

The University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) has served as the UC systemwide international exchange program since 1962. Serving all ten campuses, UCEAP continues its support of the University of California’s mission through academic instruction and exchange relationships around the world. Over 27,000 international students have completed non-degree study at a UC campus through UCEAP’s reciprocal exchange agreements.
Useful Info
Important information about our general exchange agreement: if successful, you will be nominated to the University of California as a whole, you will not be nominated to a particular campus. Part of the UCEAP application process is to then list preferences for the three campuses of UC you wish to study at. You need to be prepared to exchange to any UC campus which offers your major area of study.

Exchange Advice
Please note that no institution in the USA can guarantee enrolment in a specific subject you may need for progression in your degree. Studying breadth and electives subjects, therefore, is the wisest course of action for an exchange to these institutions. If you do try to study core subjects on exchange and do fail to enrol in one or more of those subjects this may result in having to extend your degree by a semester or full year

Under our general exchange agreement, the Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz campuses of the University of California operate on a term system with 3 of these terms being available to exchange students. Students wanting to study at these campuses must be able to stay for two terms in order to do enough credits to equate to one semester at Melbourne. Note that exchange in the Fall and Winter Terms (September to March), means students will NOT be able to return to Melbourne to study in semester 1 because they will miss the first month of the semester (March).
