Originally Latin was the language of instruction at the University until after the Belgian revolution when French as adopted. The first subjects were taught in Flemish in 1906.  During World War I Flemish was made the official language of instruction by the Germans but French was reinstated after the War.  It was not until 1930, after seven years of political motivation, that it became officially the first Flemish speaking university in Belgium.
