Program Description:
Sophia University

Sophia University
Summer School

Sophia University offers short-term summer study abroad programs. At Sophia University’s campus in the heart of Tokyo, the program participants directly experience many aspects of Japanese culture and society and witness the myriad ways in which the cultures of the world are reflected in the maze-like urban landscape of Tokyo.  The programs also enable participants to look at Japan from many different perspectives. For more information, click here.

Selection into this program may require a minimum Grade Point Average. Please check the program website for further information.

This program is Session 2 only and will run from 2 July to 27 July, 2018.

This is a STUDY ABROAD program. This means fees are payable to Sophia University directly.  Click here for a full program fee breakdown and other associated costs.

Costs do not include airfares; interested students are responsible for funding their travel to get to the host institution.

Each subject Sophia University is worth two Japanese credits.  You must successfully complete two subjects, a total of four Japanese credits, to earn 12.5 University of Melbourne points. Submit your study plan by the application deadline.

How to proceed?

Step 2: Complete your study plan using the online Study Planner (the link to this is in the application) ensuring you are selecting the "Create Overseas Plan" button to proceed.
Step 3: When your application has been assessed and approved by Global Mobility, you can complete your application with Sophia University directly.
Step 4: Once your application to the host has been accepted, request through ask.unimelb ('overseas study' - 'help with application process'), for your enrolment to be changed at the University of Melbourne to reflect that you will be doing this overseas study.

NOTE - Late Start in Semester 2

As some of these programs do not finish until the first week of semester two, you will not be back in time to start classes until the second week.  This means that in addition to the standard eligibility requirements for Melbourne Global Mobility programs, you will need to meet the following additional requirements where you choose late finishing programs.
You must:

  1. Prior to departure, attend a compulsory appointment/information session with a Global Mobility or Course Planning Officer (this will be arranged after your application has been approved);
  2. Prior to departure, sign a declaration stating that you understand your obligations and responsibilities regarding special consideration, and the class attendance, assessment tasks and hurdle requirements for each subject in which you are enrolled for the subsequent semester;
  3. Be in Australia and able to attend classes no later than the beginning of Week 2*;
  4. Check assessment and attendance requirements for your Semester 2 enrolment with the relevant teaching department/s and determine that no items of assessment will be missed, including hurdle requirements;
  5. Understand that special consideration will not be granted by the enrolling faculty because of late commencement due to participation in an international mobility program, e.g. assignment extensions or deferred exams; and
  6. Complete all Semester 2 enrolment requirements by the due date.

*In semester 2, 2018 this is Monday, 30 July.

IMPORTANT: Participation in this program for credit requires Study Plan approval by the University of Melbourne. If you are refused credit by Melbourne and consequently decide not to participate in the program, be aware that you may lose any application fee you have paid.
