Sophia University
Sophia University - January School
Sophia University is offering a four week January School option of academic classes, designed for international students. The program consists of four subjects:  Japanese Business and Economy, Media and Contemporary Issues in Japan, Education in Japan, and Japanese Language (Beginners level).  Among those subjects, students take a minimum of two.  Each subject consists of fifteen 90-minute sessions, and participants will learn about aspects of Japan comprehensively and intensively in four weeks.  In addition to lectures, participants will go on field trips related to the lecture content and also some cultural events with no or a small amount of extra cost; events may be cancelled if interest is insufficient and the number of participants may be limited.  This program is designed in such a way that the participants will be able to learn about and experience Japan both inside and outside classes.  For more information, click here

How much does it cost?*
This program is only available as a study abroad option with the payment of up-front fees to Sophia University.
¥173,000 for 3 subjects (approx. A$1,962)
¥153,000 for 2 subjects (approx. A$1,735)
  • Even if you withdraw from one subject after the payment is made, there will be no refund for the difference.
  • Payment of tuition is accepted by either of credit card, PayPal, or China Pay.
Meals, transportation, textbooks, etc. are not included in the tuition fee as outlined on the Costs webpage.

*Costs do not include airfares; interested students are responsible for funding their associated travel to get to the host university. Australian rates are as at 24 July 2017.

How much credit can be earned?
Each subject in the January Session is worth two Japanese credits (the Japanese Language subject is worth one credit). Students must take at least four credits to earn either 12.5 University of Melbourne points from their study in the January Session.  You must get your overseas study plan approved for credit to your degree here before leaving Melbourne, and students are encouraged to have multiple subjects approved to provide themselves with maximum flexibility. 

Participants need to arrange their own housing. Click for a list of the accommodation at which past participants stayed. Sophia University dormitories are not available to short-term program students.

How to proceed?
It is your responsibility to ensure you meet any eligiblity conditions set out by Sophia University; this may include any academic requirement, language proficiency test, or previous study.  

You must be nominated by the Global Mobility office to participate in the program after ensuring you meet the standard short-term overseas study eligibility criteria.
