Program Description:

Tongji University

Tongji CAUP BldngEstablished in 1907, Tongji University is one of China’s leading universities. Originally set up as a medical school by the German government, it was formally named as a Chinese university in 1923.  The nationwide reforms of the in early 1950s lead to Tongji University becoming known for its civil engineering and architecture programs.  In the 1990s the University merged with the Shanghai Institute of Urban Construction and the Shanghai Institute of Building Materials, strengthening its expertise in building and architecture.

Today the College of Architecture & Urban Planning (CAUP) is within the top three architecture and urban planning schools in China and ranks as one of the pre-eminent architecture schools in the world.  

Located in Shanghai, China’s largest city, CAUP offers an extensive range of subjects taught in English for both undergraduate and graduate level students studying architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and design.

Tongji University was the first university to introduce Urban Planning into China in the 1950s.
