Technical University of Federico Santa Maria

main building Valparaíso campus

The Technical University of Federico Santa Maria, in Spanish Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, or sometimes simply Santa Maria University (USM), was founded with the bequest of the wealthy Chilean, Federico Santa Maria who died in Paris in 1925.  Begun in 1931 in Valparaíso, his hometown, as the School of Crafts and Arts and School of Engineering José Miguel Carrera, the current name was adopted in 1935.  Santa Maria's desire was to contribute to the material progress of Chile and expand its cultural horizons by educating the best students from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

It is one of the most prestigious engineering universities in Chile and Latin America, with special emphasis on the basic sciences, engineering and technical fields. The University has campuses in Valparaiso, Viña del Mar, Santiago, Concepción and Rancagua, as well as an international campus in Guayaquil, Ecuador. USM is a private, not-for-profit university and belongs to the 25 traditional universities in the Chilean University Council of Rectors.
